Healthy Scalp Care

People overlook something that they are not able to see. This is the reason that generally those areas of your body are ignored that you cannot see and the scalp is one of them. The skin of your scalp is an extension of your facial skin and similar to it, scalp skin also experiences problems like dryness, itchiness, or irritation.

We usually take for granted the skin on our heads and do not give much consideration to our scalp. While picking hair care products like shampoos, conditioners we only think about how these products will be beneficial for our hair.

It is critical for healthy hair to protect the health of the scalp. You can learn how to improve your scalp’s health and that can become a road to having healthy and lusterful hairs, thereby boosting your confidence.

Here are some of the ways through which you can take better care of your scalp.

What damages the Scalp?

The condition of the scalp impacts the growth of the hair. The disruption in the balance of the microbiome present in hair follicles can lead to many problems like dermatitis (seborrheic or atopic), or dandruff. Dirty, rusted, and contaminated scissors can also cause fungal infections.

How to get a Healthy Scalp?

There are 5 things that you need to maintain while you are striving to achieve a healthy scalp. Maintaining the right moisture and oils in hair is essential. Similarly, maintaining the right pH balance as well. Keeping your scalp clean is also important. Improving circulation of blood in the scalp also helps to get nutrients to scalp skin and finally, protecting the scalp by repeating all the above makes sure that you have a healthy scalp.

Washing the hairs with gentle products

The skin of your scalp has a natural production of oils keeping the skin healthy and moisturized. When these natural oils are removed from the scalp, it becomes damaged and dry. Therefore, while shopping for products of hair care, you should choose products that are free from sulfates, fragrances, or alcohol.

Sulfate strips the scalp of all the natural oil, making skin prone to irritation. Similarly, if you want a healthy scalp, you should stay away from products that contain harsh chemicals like dyes and bleach. Your hair shaft, as well as scalp, can get hurt from such products.

Do not wash your hair too often!

Naturally, you will want to wash your hair often to avoid oily hair. But this method may backfire. When you wash your hair too often with shampoo, it strips the hair of its natural oils. A decrease in natural oil is countered by the scalp by producing more oil to keep the skin hydrated. This results in hairs looking oily.

Those of you who have an itchy or dry scalp can benefit from growing the interval between hair washes. This will balance out the production of oil in the hairs. It is recommended that you wash your hair thrice or four times maximum in a week.

Supplement your diet with Omega-3

Many people believe that taking fish oil as a part of your diet can prevent loss of hair by promoting its growth. A study was conducted in 2015 in which women who thought their hair was thinning, a group of them took fish oil while the other group was administered a placebo product. The study observed that after 90 days, the group of women who took fish oil reported an increase in the growth and strength of their hair.

The circulation of blood is stimulated by omega-3s in the scalp resulting in the nourishment of hair. The inflammation associated with loss of hair is also reduced by it. In another study conducted in 2015, a supplement containing omega-3, antioxidants, and omega-6 was taken by women who were suffering from pattern hair loss for six months. All the women reported reduced hair loss and an enhanced hair density.

Increase intake of Antioxidants

When the beneficial antioxidants become overwhelmed in the body by the damaging free radicals, oxidative stress occurs. Many health conditions such as heart conditions, diabetes, and cancer not only result from oxidative stress, hair loss, and the scalp health also deteriorates due to it. Vegetables and fruits are the best sources of antioxidants.  Eating a variety of vegetables and fruits can help get a variety of antioxidants in your body.

Exfoliate the Scalp

You can move your scalp care one step ahead by adding exfoliation to your hair care routine. Similar to the rest of the skin on your body, when you exfoliate your scalp, flakes and dry patches are removed. The problem of excess sebum and product build-up clogging hair follicles is also eliminated. Another benefit of exfoliation is that it dilates the blood vessels, promoting blood circulation and providing hair follicles with nutrients, making your hair grow more.

Protect your Scalp

Just like you protect your skin from sun radiation, you also need to keep your scalp safe from harmful UV radiation as well. The harmful rays of the sun can damage your scalp, increasing the process of hair thinning. The chances of exposure of the scalp to UV rays increase when you have thin hairs. When going outside in the sun for longer durations, it is recommended to always cover your hair with a scarf or use a hat.

    The Bottom Line

If you aim to have healthier, shiny, and luscious hairs, you need to amp up your game for scalp care because healthier hairs result from a healthy scalp. A healthy scalp can be maintained with the use of gentle hair care products, supplementing your diet with omega-3, probiotics, and foods containing antioxidants. Avoid washing your hair too frequently because when you shampoo your hair, you also strip off the natural oils. Using good quality scissors also has an impact on the scalp’s health.
