How much can a barber make? A barber's salary

A barber in Australia averages a total of $56,476 as salary yearly. These estimates are obtained from the 113 salaries anonymously submitted by barber employees and from past and present job advertisements in the past three years.

A career in barbing has a significant number of both part-time and self-employed workers. Part-time barbers may skew salaries downward, but the self-employed barbers make and keep their clients depending on location and building a reputation. Experience can affect pay but has more influence on job prospects.

How much a barber earns depends on how experienced he/she is

In Canada, average barbers make about 18 percent above the mean, while experienced barbers make 14 percent under the standard. According to the National Careers Service, a hairdresser in the United Kingdom makes an average of about £14,000 as a beginner. An experienced hairdresser makes between £14,000 and £24,000, and an extremely experienced hairdresser can average up to £30,000 in a year.

An experienced barber in Australia makes slightly more money in comparison to the previously mentioned locations. As a beginner in Australia, a barber earns an average of AU$43,000. And a barber with experience of five to twenty years makes an average of AU$47,000. And if you have more than 20 years of barbing experience, you are looking at averaging up to AU$50,000.

Benefits and Bonuses for Barbers (Extra Money)

Part of the pay package for barbers is the commissions they get. According to PayScale, barbers commissions in India average up to INR35,000, and in South Africa, an average R18,500 is made from commissions. Barber’s commission in the UK can get up to £2,349.

Generally, employer-provided health benefits are low because of the presence of both part-time and self-employed barbers. In Canada, barbers have dental, medical, and sight coverage at just 11 percent only, which means that almost nine of ten barbers do not have employer-provided health benefits.

Only about three percent of barbers in Australia get just medical care without the inclusion of dental or eye care, according to PayScale.

And in the United Kingdom, as little as two percent of barbers get to enjoy medical care, while four percent get the eye care and three percent receive dental care.

In India, above one-third of those in the barbing career only get medical care, with no dental or eye care. PayScale reported that in South Africa, there are no employer-provided benefits for barbers.
